Instructions By: Ric Kerns (Co-Owner of Jimmy's Java)

Pour over coffee is a simple and elegant way to brew coffee that allows you to control every aspect of the brewing process. With just a little practice, you can make a delicious cup of coffee that's tailored to your taste. Here's how to make the perfect pour over coffee:

Step 1: Choose the Right Coffee

The first step to making great pour over coffee is choosing the right coffee beans. Look for high-quality beans that are freshly roasted. You can choose from a variety of roasts, from light to dark, depending on your preference.

We recommend: Ethiopian Natural Limu (Medium or Dark Roast) from Jimmy’s Java

Step 2: Grind the Coffee

Grind your coffee beans just before brewing to ensure maximum freshness. The ideal grind for pour over coffee is medium-fine. The coffee grounds should resemble coarse sand.

Step 3: Heat the Water

Heat water to just below boiling point. The ideal temperature is between 195-205°F (90-96°C).

Step 4: Prepare the Filter and Coffee

Place a paper or mesh filter in the pour over dripper and rinse it with hot water to remove any paper taste, if you use a paper filter. Discard the rinse water and add the ground coffee to the filter.

Step 5: Bloom the Coffee

Pour a small amount of hot water over the coffee grounds to saturate them. This is called blooming and allows the coffee to release carbon dioxide that has built up during the roasting process. Let the coffee bloom for 30 seconds.

Step 6: Pour the Water

Slowly pour the hot water over the coffee grounds in a circular motion, starting from the center and working your way outward. Pour enough water to fully saturate the grounds, but not so much that the water overflows the filter.

Step 7: Continue Pouring

Continue pouring the water in a circular motion until you have reached the desired amount of coffee. The ideal coffee-to-water ratio is 1:16, or one part coffee to 16 parts water.

Step 8: Let the Coffee Drip

Once you have poured all the water, let the coffee drip through the filter until it's finished. This should take about 3-4 minutes.

Step 9: Serve and Enjoy

Remove the pour over dripper and discard the used coffee grounds. Pour the coffee into your favorite Jimmy’s Java mug and enjoy!
